The Sons of Heru Male Youth Leadership program is for male youth between the ages of 13 and 16 years old to teach them the necessary principles, values, cultural history and discipline which will anchor them on their passage through Adolescence, Puberty, and into Adulthood. The aim of the Sons of Heru is to encourage the spiritual, mental, social and physical development of young men.
We see exposure to varied experiences as a key part of our program. Some of these experiences include camping, swimming, climbing, hiking, physical fitness, travel, community organizing, scientific exploration, and much more. The aim of these activities is the development of (self confidence, responsibility, courage and intelligence.
Our ancestors and many current indigenous cultures believe a simple principle: Manhood is not a given. It is something that one must be groomed and prepared for. In many societies, a man that had not completed his ‘rites’ was still considered a ‘boy’, among his peers. Today, there is a great need for our young men to step up and become a positive force in their communities. It is time for the return of the Warrior!
In our program, we stress spiritual excellence and moral fortitude to serve as ideal models of our communities. The model we use is based on the ancient, proven traditions of our ancestors. This traditional approach stresses discipline through peer accountability, behavior modeling and a system of merits/demerits based on accomplishments and positive feedback.
